Accurate and timely diagnostics can make a difference in your pet receiving effective veterinary care. We have an in-house lab at Animal Hospital of Fort Lauderdale, allowing us to offer pet diagnostics such as lab work and imaging for cats and dogs. Our state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment allows us to perform a wide range of tests so that your pet can receive the care that they need without delay.
From standard annual lab work to diagnostic imaging, we perform the testing your pet needs for an accurate diagnosis from your veterinarian. Routine diagnostics allow us to track your pet’s baseline over time to catch issues.
Lab Work for Cats and Dogs
Our in-house laboratory is equipped with advanced IDEXX lab equipment, enabling us to perform various diagnostic tests on-site.

On-site testing allows us to obtain results quickly and begin treatment immediately if necessary. For testing we cannot perform in-house, we can send samples out to trusted reference labs for analysis. Our lab services include:

- Diagnostic Blood Work: We offer complete blood count (CBC), blood chemistry, and electrolyte testing. These tests help assess your pet’s overall health, identify underlying conditions, and monitor ongoing health issues.
- Urinalysis: Using the SediVue Urine Sediment Analyzer, we can detect the presence of blood cells, epithelial cells, bacteria, casts, and crystals in your pet's urine. This allows us to diagnose urinary tract infections, kidney disease, and other urinary conditions.
- Fecal Testing: Fecal analysis is used for detecting gastrointestinal parasites such as worms. We examine fresh stool samples microscopically to identify parasite eggs so that your pet receives appropriate treatment if needed.
- Allergy Testing: If your pet is experiencing symptoms such as itching, redness, or digestive upset, they may be suffering from allergies. We can perform allergy testing through a blood test to identify if specific allergens may be affecting your pet.
- Stem Cells: We can process stem cells in-house for stem cell therapy treatments. This is not a full list of our diagnostic testing capabilities. If your pet requires annual or specialty diagnostics, contact us to find out what our in-house veterinary laboratory has to offer.
Digital X-ray, Ultrasound, and Endoscopy Imaging
In addition to our in-house lab work, we offer advanced imaging services, including pet X-rays, endoscopy, and ultrasound.
Our veterinarians utilize the IDEXX ImageVue DR40 X-ray system, which provides high-quality digital radiographs. Pet X-rays are essential for diagnosing conditions such as fractures, joint issues, and respiratory problems and for detecting foreign objects. This system is integrated with Web PACS cloud-based software, allowing us to collaborate in real time with specialists if needed. The ability to share images instantly with specialists means that your pet receives the most accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
Ultrasound imaging is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that uses sound waves to create images of your pet’s internal organs. A pet ultrasound is particularly useful to veterinarians for evaluating soft tissues, such as the liver, kidneys, heart, and abdominal organs. Ultrasound can help diagnose conditions such as tumors, cysts, and organ abnormalities, as well as monitor pregnancies.

Endoscopy is the process used to evaluate parts of the body via video. Utilizing a digital optic camera, we can view your pet’s organs, such as the esophagus, stomach, trachea, or rectum. Endoscopy offers a variety of diagnostic possibilities and is an excellent diagnostic tool to visualize and possibly remove foreign bodies without invasive surgery.

Pet Labs & Imaging FAQS
One of the significant advantages of in-house diagnostics is the speed at which we can obtain results. Most tests, including blood work, urinalysis, and imaging, can be completed within the same day, often within just a few hours. This rapid turnaround allows us to make informed decisions about your pet’s care quickly.
Getting a urine sample from your pet is not difficult, but it might take more than one try. For male dogs, place a wide-mouthed jar under him as he lifts his leg. For a female, hold a flat pan or ice cream dish between her back legs when she squats. For cats, place wide wax paper strips in the litter box or fill the box with a nonabsorbent litter or uncooked popcorn kernels (which are nonabsorbent). After the cat has urinated, pour out the urine into a jar.
There are certain parasites, such as tapeworms, that are visible to the naked eye; others must be detected under a microscope. With the use of the microscope, we are able to determine if parasites are present by the presence of eggs. If you bring in a fresh stool sample, we will be glad to examine it microscopically to see if your pet has worms. It’s also not a bad idea to routinely deworm your pet every 6 months to a year.
Sedation is not usually required for X-rays or ultrasounds. However, if your pet is anxious or in pain and cannot stay still, mild sedation may be recommended for clear imaging. Our veterinarians will discuss this with you before the imaging process.
